This Privacy Policy has been written to satisfy the requirements of both Google Play’s User Data policy (including the April 2025 Android ID update and background location rules) and Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines (including Privacy Nutrition Label, App Tracking Transparency, and Privacy Manifest requirements). It also complies with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

This document must be hosted at a publicly accessible, non-geofenced, non-PDF URL and linked from both app store listings and within the app itself.

Saf O’ Me (“we”, “our”, “us”) is committed to protecting your privacy. We collect, use, disclose, and store information about you and your use of our GPS tracking devices, mobile app, and online services (collectively the “Services”). This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal and sensitive information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs), Google Play’s User Data policy, and Apple’s App Store Review Guidelines. By using our Services, you consent to the practices described here.

1. Data We Collect

We collect only data necessary to provide and improve our Services, ensure user safety, and comply with the law. Every data type, its source, whether it is collected in the background, and its purpose are listed below.

*  Android ID was reclassified as a Device Identifier under Google Play’s April 2025 policy update and must be declared under “Device or other IDs” in the Data Safety form.

The following are classified as sensitive on both Google Play and Apple App Store and require platform-specific consent mechanisms before collection:

  • Precise Location (background / always-on) — core safety feature
  • Approximate Location (background / always-on) — GPS fallback
  • Health & Fitness data — heart rate, SpO₂, blood pressure, fall detection
  • Audio / Microphone — Sound Guardian sessions only (manual, user-to-caregiver)
  • Advertising ID — requires ATT prompt (iOS) and opt-in consent (Android)

2. Background Location Access

How We Collect Your Information

Always-on location tracking is the core safety function of Saf O’ Me. The following features require background location

  • Real-Time Safety Tracking: The device continuously sends GPS coordinates to our servers so caregivers can monitor the wearer’s location even when the app is closed.
  • SOS Emergency Alerts: When the SOS button is pressed or a fall is detected, the device’s current location is immediately sent to designated emergency contacts.
  • Geo-Fence Alerts: The app monitors whether the device enters or exits a designated safe zone and triggers notifications automatically.

Accuracy note: GPS can be imprecise. In weak-signal areas (indoors, rural) location may be based on cell towers or Wi-Fi. We do not guarantee location accuracy. Do not rely solely on device location for life-critical decisions.

User control: You may disable background location in your device settings. Doing so will disable most safety features including SOS, geo-fencing, and live tracking.

Google Play — Required Background Location Disclosure

Saf O’ Me requires access to your location in the background — including when the app is closed — to provide:

–  Continuous GPS safety tracking for your caregiver

–  SOS emergency alerts with your current location

–  Geo-fence boundary notifications

Location is used in the background as a core always-on safety feature and is never used for advertising without your separate consent. You can disable this in device settings, but it will turn off safety features.

3. Sound Guardian — Audio and Microphone Access

📌  Important Clarification — Saf O’ Me’s Role

Sound Guardian is a direct peer-to-peer audio session between the caregiver and the device user. Saf O’ Me is NOT a party to this call, does NOT monitor the call, does NOT record the audio, and does NOT store or transmit the audio on our servers. The microphone permission is used solely to facilitate this direct caregiver-to-device connection. Saf O’ Me’s role is limited to providing the interface that allows the caregiver to initiate the session.

The following conditions govern all Sound Guardian use:

  • Manual activation only: A caregiver must actively start the session in the app. It is never triggered automatically by SOS, fall, or any other event.
  • Direct peer-to-peer session: The audio session is between the caregiver and the device user only. Saf O’ Me has no access to, involvement in, or role in the audio call.
  • No recording or storage: Audio is never recorded, stored on device, stored on our servers, or shared with any third party by Saf O’ Me.
  • LED indicator: The device’s blue and red LEDs blink during any active Sound Guardian session, providing visible notice to the device user and anyone nearby.
  • Express consent required: The feature is disabled by default. Enabling it requires affirmative in-app consent from the account holder, confirming the monitored person (or their guardian) has agreed.
  • Safe Pro subscribers only: Available exclusively to paid Safe Pro plan subscribers.
  • Lawful use: You must use this feature in compliance with all applicable laws (including NSW, VIC, and other state surveillance and listening device laws). You are solely responsible for lawful use.

⚠️ User Responsibility

Since Saf O’ Me has no role in the Sound Guardian audio session, you are solely responsible for using this feature lawfully and ethically. Saf O’ Me is not liable for any consequences arising from your use of this feature. Misuse or unauthorised surveillance is strictly prohibited.

Google Play — Required Microphone Disclosure

Saf O’ Me uses the device microphone ONLY for the optional Safe Pro Sound Guardian feature.

–  This feature is disabled by default and requires your explicit consent

4. How We Collect Information

📌  Important Clarification — Saf O’ Me’s Role

  • Account Registration & Purchases: Information you directly provide when creating an account or making a purchase.
  • Device and App — Automatic: The Saf O’ Me hardware device and app automatically transmit location, health, and diagnostic data to our servers during normal operation.
  • Runtime Permissions — Android: The app requests Android runtime permissions (location “always”, microphone for Safe Pro). A prominent in-app disclosure appears BEFORE each permission prompt, as required by Google Play policy.
  • Runtime Permissions — iOS: The app requests iOS permissions (location “always”, microphone for Safe Pro) with NS Usage Description strings. Advertising ID access requires an App Tracking Transparency (ATT) prompt.
  • Third-Party SDKs: Integrated SDKs (Firebase, Facebook SDK, Stripe, Google Maps) may automatically collect device identifiers and usage data. We are responsible for their Google Play and App Store policy compliance.
  • Cookies & Web Analytics: Our website (safome.au) uses cookies and Google Analytics to understand user interactions.

5. How We Use Your Data

Data is used only for purposes directly related to providing, maintaining, and improving our Services:

 

    • Core Safety Services: Location and health data are used to operate real-time tracking, SOS alerts, geo-fence notifications, fall detection, and emergency contact alerts.
    • Sound Guardian (Safe Pro): Microphone access enables the direct caregiver-to-device audio session. Saf O’ Me does not use, monitor, or access this audio.
    • Account Management: Personal information is used to manage accounts, process payments, and communicate with you.
    • App Improvement: Anonymised app usage and crash data improve reliability and inform new feature development.
    • Personalised Advertising (consent required on both platforms): Advertising ID (AdID on Android, IDFA on iOS) may be used for personalised ads via Google Ads and Facebook Ads ONLY with your explicit opt-in (Android) or ATT consent (iOS). You may withdraw consent at any time.
    • Legal Compliance: Data may be used to comply with legal obligations, respond to lawful government requests, and enforce our Terms of Service.

🔒  Data Minimisation Commitment

We collect and use only the minimum data necessary for each stated purpose. Sensitive data (location, health) is never used for advertising. Location and audio data are never shared with third parties beyond what is described in Section 6.

We do not sell personal data. We share data only with service providers contractually required to protect your data and use it solely for stated purposes.

8a. App Tracking Transparency (ATT)

  ATT Requirement

The app uses Advertising ID (IDFA) for personalised advertising via Google Ads and Facebook Ads. Under iOS 14.5+, you MUST request user permission via the App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework BEFORE accessing IDFA.

“Saf O’ Me would like permission to show you relevant adverts and measure ad performance. This is optional — you can still use all safety features without enabling this. You can change your choice at any time in iOS Settings.”

 

If the user declines ATT: IDFA access must be disabled and no advertising tracking may occur. All core safety features must continue to work without ATT consent.

9. In-App Prominent Disclosures (Both Platforms)

Both Google Play and Apple require that a prominent in-app disclosure appears before each sensitive permission request. These must be inside the app itself, shown during normal use, not behind a menu. The following are the three required disclosure screens for Safome:

Disclosure 1 — Background Location

Tap “Allow” to enable personalised ads, or “Ask App Not to Track” to decline.

Disclosure 4 — Notifications (Android 13+ / iOS)

10. Under-18 and Vulnerable Users

  • Guardian accounts: Accounts for minors or dependents must be created and managed by a parent, legal guardian, or authorised carer, who consents to all data collection and monitoring on the user’s behalf.
  • One guardian per device: Each device may only be linked to one guardian account at a time.
  • Additional caregivers: Secondary caregivers can be granted access only by the primary guardian through account settings.
  • Children under 13: We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13 without verifiable parental consent. Contact privacy@safome.au if you believe this has occurred.
  • NDIS participants: Authorised NDIS carers may manage accounts on behalf of participants in accordance with applicable law.
  • Apple / Google Families policy: This app is not designated as a children’s app under Apple’s Kids Category or Google Play’s Families policy. If you are using it with a minor, you as guardian are responsible for all consent.

13. Security

  • Encryption in transit: All data between devices/apps and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS.
  • Encryption at rest: All data stored on AWS Sydney servers with industry-standard encryption.
  • Access controls: Only authorised personnel may access personal data; all access is logged.
  • Regular audits: We perform regular security reviews and comply with data protection best practices.
  • Third-party SDK compliance: We are responsible for ensuring all SDKs comply with both Google Play and App Store Developer Program policies, including privacy manifest requirements (iOS 17+).

🚨  Notifiable Data Breaches (Australia)

Saf O’ Me complies with the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). If a breach is likely to cause serious harm, we will notify affected users and the OAIC within the required timeframe.

14. Advertising and Marketing

  • Personalised ads — Android (opt-in required): AdID is shared with Google Ads and Facebook only if you have opted in. Opt out: Settings → Google → Ads.
  • Personalised ads — iOS (ATT consent required): IDFA is accessed only with your ATT consent. Opt out or change: Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking.
  • No advertising use of location or health data: Location data and health data are never used for advertising purposes on either platform.
  • Push notifications: Safety-critical notifications are enabled by default. Marketing notifications are optional and can be disabled in app or device settings.
  • Newsletters: If you opted in, you may receive marketing emails. Unsubscribe at any time via the link in any email.

15. Important Disclaimers

🚨  Not Emergency Services

The Saf O’ Me device is a personal safety tool and NOT a substitute for calling emergency services. In any life-threatening situation, call 000 (Australia) immediately.

  • Medical disclaimer: Health monitoring features are for convenience only and are NOT medical devices. Not intended for diagnosis or treatment. Always follow qualified medical advice.
  • Accuracy: We cannot guarantee continuous connectivity or data accuracy. Service may be disrupted by network outages, device malfunctions, or factors beyond our control.
  • Sound Guardian: Saf O’ Me has no involvement in Sound Guardian audio sessions. The caregiver and device user are solely responsible for all aspects of their direct session.
  • User responsibility: You are responsible for using the Services lawfully. Unauthorised tracking or recording is strictly prohibited.
